Background
No special needs group strains the
service capacity of community mental health/mental retardation services to a
greater extent than people with dual diagnoses of developmental disabilities
and psychiatric conditions
(National Association
for the Dually Diagnosed, 2006).
To insure the coordination of treatment
and support for children and adults with a diagnosis of serious mental illness
and intellectual disability in
Goals
* Establish
dual-services case management
within the MH/MR Program to serve
children and adults with dual needs.
* Establish a comprehensive plan that
results in creating an array of clinical, residential, support services and
informal supports with the capacity of serving children and adults with dual
needs.
* Promote the understanding and acceptance
of individuals with dual needs within the MH/MR system, provider agencies and
the community at large through public education.
